We Don’t Just Powder Coat Metal — We Manufacture It
Powder coating is a natural extension of what we already do at Black Forge Art. We design and manufacture premium metalwork, including gates, signs, weathervanes, wall art, architectural features and bespoke steel and stainless-steel fabrications.
Because we manufacture powder-coated products ourselves, we understand that a successful finish begins long before the powder is applied. Weld quality, fabrication methods, drainage, sharp edges, corrosion, contamination and surface preparation can all affect the finished result.
We approach customer work with the same care we expect for our own products. Your item is not treated as an anonymous part moving through a production line. It is assessed as a complete piece of metalwork, with attention given to its construction, intended use and the finish it requires.
This manufacturing experience is particularly valuable when working with gates, railings, brackets, frames and bespoke fabrications. We understand how these products are made, how they are installed and where corrosion or coating failure is most likely to begin.
Complete Preparation and Finishing
Where appropriate, items can be professionally prepared in our dedicated blasting room before powder coating. This removes old paint, loose corrosion and surface contamination while creating a suitable profile for the new coating.

Powder Coating vs Wet Paint – What’s the Difference?
Unlike conventional wet paint, powder coating is applied to properly prepared metal as a dry powder using an electrostatic process. The coated item is then baked and cured in an industrial oven, where the powder flows and forms a hard, continuous coating bonded to the prepared metal surface.
The result is a tough, attractive and highly durable finish, particularly well suited to architectural metalwork, machinery, agricultural equipment and products intended for regular handling or outdoor use.
The final performance of any coating depends on the condition and design of the underlying metal, the preparation process, the chosen powder and the environment in which the item will be used. We assess each project individually and will explain any visible corrosion, previous repairs or design features that may affect the result.
Powder Coating for Larger Fabrications
Many local powder coating facilities are restricted by smaller ovens designed primarily for wheels, frames and compact components. Black Forge Art has invested in a substantially larger curing oven so that we can accommodate sizeable gates, railings, frames and fabricated assemblies.
Powder Coating Oven Capacity
Our curing oven measures approximately 3.0 m × 2.0 m × 2.0 m. Long, narrow items may occasionally exceed 3 metres in length where they can be safely positioned diagonally within the oven. Please contact us to discuss individual requirements.
This capacity allows us to process many larger items as complete fabrications, reducing the need to divide suitable work into smaller sections purely because of oven limitations.
Examples may include estate and pedestrian gates, railing panels, balustrades, agricultural components, machinery guards, steel frames, architectural features, garden structures and commercial fabrications.
Actual capacity will depend on the item’s overall dimensions, shape, weight, hanging points and the clearance required around it during coating and curing. Please send photographs and approximate dimensions so that we can confirm whether the item can be safely processed.

Black Powder Coating — Our Standard Production Finish
Black is the colour we use most frequently across our own Black Forge Art product range. Gates, signs, brackets, weathervanes, wall art and architectural products are continually moving through our normal black production schedule.
Where black is suitable for your project, this can provide a practical advantage. As it is our regular production colour, black will often offer the most economical route and may allow greater flexibility when scheduling the work.
Our standard black finish is particularly well suited to gates, railings, architectural steelwork, brackets, garden furniture, agricultural components and traditional metalwork
Alternative RAL Colours and Finishes
Black is not the only option. We can source a wide range of RAL colours, textures, gloss levels and specialist powders for individual projects.
Where a colour or finish is being ordered specifically for your work, the cost of sourcing the powder will be included within the quotation. This is because the required powder may need to be purchased as a dedicated box or batch even when only part of it is used on the project.
Please tell us the required RAL number or provide details of the finish you are trying to match. Physical colour samples are always preferable where an exact visual match is important, as screens and printed charts can display colours differently
From Bare Metal to Finished Product
1. Initial Assessment
We begin by reviewing photographs, approximate dimensions, the type of metal and the condition of the item. We will also ask where it will be used and whether any areas need masking or protecting from coating.
2. Stripping and Surface Preparation
Existing paint, powder coating, loose corrosion and surface contamination must be removed where required. Many steel items are prepared using our in-house shot blasting service, which cleans the surface and creates a profile suitable for coating.
Heavy grease, silicone, sealants, oils and certain chemical residues may require additional cleaning or may make an item unsuitable until they have been removed.
3. Inspection
Once the surface is clean, previously hidden pitting, corrosion, repairs or fabrication defects may become visible. We will draw attention to significant issues where they could affect the appearance or performance of the coating.
4. Masking and Preparation for Coating
Threads, bearing surfaces, electrical contacts, precision fits and other areas that must remain uncoated can be masked where agreed in advance. Suitable hanging or support points are also identified before application.
5. Powder Application
Dry powder is electrostatically applied to the prepared metal. Care is taken to achieve suitable coverage around edges, corners, joints and detailed areas of the fabrication.
6. Oven Curing
The coated item is transferred to our large curing oven and heated in accordance with the requirements of the selected powder. During curing, the powder flows and forms the finished coating.
7. Final Inspection
After cooling, the item is visually inspected before collection or onward delivery. Once coated, items should be handled and transported carefully to avoid scratching or impact damage.

Items Containing Other Materials
Powder coating requires the entire item to be heated. Rubber, plastic, timber, fillers, adhesives, sealed bearings, electronics and other heat-sensitive components will normally need to be removed before the item is accepted.
Closed or sealed sections can also present risks when heated. Every fabrication must therefore be assessed before processing

Powder Coating Frequently Asked Questions
How much does powder coating cost?
Every project is quoted individually. Cost depends on the dimensions, weight, condition, preparation required, masking, colour, finish and number of items. Photographs and approximate measurements are normally enough for us to provide initial guidance.
Can you powder coat over rust or old paint?
Loose rust, paint and previous coatings generally need to be removed before powder coating. Applying a new finish over an unstable surface will not produce a durable result. Our in-house shot blasting is suitable for preparing many steel items.
Can you powder coat large gates and railings?
Yes, subject to their precise dimensions, shape, weight and construction. Our curing oven measures approximately 3 metres × 2 metres × 2 metres, giving us significantly more capacity than many smaller local facilities.
Is black cheaper than other colours?
Black is our regular production colour and will often be the most economical option. Other RAL colours and finishes can be sourced, but the cost of ordering project-specific powder will be included in the quotation.
Can you match an existing colour?
We can work to a known RAL colour or assess a physical sample. An exact match cannot always be guaranteed, particularly where the existing finish has faded or where different coating systems and surface textures are being compared.
Do you offer shot blasting as well?
Yes. Our dedicated blasting room measures approximately 5 metres × 2 metres × 2 metres and allows us to prepare much larger fabrications than a conventional blasting cabinet. Visit our shot blasting page for more information.
Do you powder coat wheels?
Our service is principally focused on fabricated metalwork, gates, railings, agricultural items, machinery and larger components. Please contact us with details of any wheel-related enquiry so that we can confirm whether it falls within the work we are accepting.
Do I need to dismantle the item?
All heat-sensitive and non-metal components normally need to be removed. This may include rubber, plastic, timber, electronics, bearings, seals and certain fillers. We will advise after reviewing photographs, but dismantling is generally the customer’s responsibility unless otherwise agreed.
How long will the work take?
Turnaround depends on preparation, current workload, item size and powder availability. Black work can often be incorporated into our normal production schedule more easily than a special colour. A likely timescale will be provided with the quotation.
Can I bring the item directly to you?
Please contact us first. We are a working manufacturing workshop and do not accept unannounced deliveries. Once the project has been discussed, we can arrange a suitable drop-off time.
